Beans Are Good Food

Beans are known as poor mans meat and theyve nourished the world since the beginning of time. Dried beans, also known as legumes, are packed with nutrients. They are also advantageous because once dried, beans are almost imperishable; therefore they have a long shelf life.

There are many types of beans: black beans, great northern beans, lima beans, kidney beans, navy beans, pinto beans, mung beans, fava (or broad) beans, garbanzo beans (or chick peas), cannelloni beans and black eyed peas. Nutritionally speaking they are all powerhouses of energy, vitamins and minerals. They are good sources of protein, iron, phosphorus and potassium. Most are also fat-free, and unless canned, low in sodium. They are also a very good source of fiber. They even offer a small amount of calcium (about 40-80 milligrams per cup).

How can you incorporate more beans into your diet? Try this:
When dining out at salad bars, include some garbanzo beans or a three-bean salad in your green salad.
When making soups and salads at home, add beans.
Add an extra can of beans to your chili recipe.
Using canned beans does up the sodium but if you drain and rinse them, they are a convenient way to use beans for soups or dips.
The next time you make potato salad, add a rinsed can of navy beans to the bowl and mix.
Beans and Rice is a classic dish and a wonderful accompaniment to Tex-Mex dishes or can serve as a main meal. If you have leftover ham or pork, you can add cubed pieces to a rice and bean mixture for extra flavor.

Seek out some low fat bean recipes and enjoy these nutritional powerhouses. Try the quick and easy recipes below to help you include some nutrient-packed beans into your diet this summer.

EASY BEAN DIP
15-ounce can navy beans or white kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 teaspoon lemon juice
3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
1 to 3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 strips bacon, cooked crisp, drained and crumbled
3 tablespoons bleu or Gorgonzola cheese
dash of pepper or paprika if desired

Put drained beans into food processor; add lemon juice, parsley, and garlic. Mix until well blended. Remove from processor into small bowl. Mix in bacon and cheese, sprinkle with paprika and serve with pita chips, or whole-wheat crackers. Can be made ahead, keep refrigerated.

QUICK BEANS AND RICE
2/3 cup water
2/3 cup uncooked instant rice or instant brown rice
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup coarsely chopped tomato
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (add more for more heat)
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsley
15-ounce can black beans, drained
1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese or shredded cheddar-jack cheese
cubed ham, if desired

Boil water in saucepan, stir in rice. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Heat oil in skillet coated with cooking spray over medium heat. When hot, add onion, celery, bell pepper, and garlic; saut 5 minutes until tender. Add chopped tomato, salt, crushed red pepper, and cumin; saut 2 minutes. Stir in cooked rice, cilantro and black beans (and ham if using); cook 1 minute or until thoroughly heated. Divide bean mixture between four plates, garnish with shredded cheese.

After School Activity For The Hyperactive Child

ADHD refers to attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder. Most children with this disorder suffer from hyperactivity and attention problems. Parents of children with ADHD are well aware that inattention and hyperactivity continue throughout the day. Occupying such children after school hours can be as challenging as keeping them safe during the school day.

In order to choose the right after school activity for your child, you need to understand how ADHD affects them. Does your child enjoy sports? Do they find it easy to get along with teammates? Or are they put-off by competition? Does your child vocalize their feelings, or is communication a problem?

Physical exercise is always beneficial for a child suffering from ADHD. Exercise uses up extra energy and helps to stimulate the brain. Having a child with ADHD involved with team activities can teach them social skills and discipline. But, if your child shies away from team sports, you may want to look at activities like, cycling, bowling, swimming or gymnastics. Martial Arts is a great activity for ADHD children as it not only teach techniques of self-defense but also self-control and patience.

If your child shows inclination towards the fine arts, instead of sports, you should look at some other options. Acting classes are a wonderful form of creative exercise. It also provides the child with ample opportunity to develop their social skills. Music, art or dance can help the child to keep themselves busy and entertained.

What if you child is not interested in sports, or the fine arts? Scouts or another community oriented club are great for any child with ADHD. These clubs may do any of the following, cleaning a park, putting on a show, helping out in an old age home, all of which are various activities that may pique your child's interest.

Whatever form of activity you choose, make sure that you monitor your child's progress periodically. If you feel that there is no progress, you may need to change the activity. Anything that increases your child's self-esteem is good. You may enlist the help of the coach or teacher to assess your child's development.

There are certain activities that are detrimental to a child suffering from ADHD. Computer and video games are a definite NO. Since these games need no interaction, children will feel all the more isolated. These children also find it difficult to distinguish between the good and the bad messages. They may therefore show an inclination to stick to messages that are not needed. Games that need the child to sit and wait for his turn patiently tax his patience and will not be a success.

Although you would want these children to be as near to normal as possible, understanding their needs and limits will help you select the right after school activity - one that is fulfilling, tiring as well as challenging.

Choosing A Process Server

In civil court matters, a process server is someone who serves or delivers legal documents, ie. subpeonas, summonses, court orders, various legal notices and in some cases writs. Process servers normally fall into one of four (4) categories:

1. Registered or licensed process servers: In most states, process servers are registered by their county. In some states, like California a process server, once registered in one county can serve papers in any other county within that state. In some other states a process server can only serve papers in the county in which he or she is registered. Most, but not all counties, when registering a process server require the applicant to be bonded or insured.

2. Private detectives and investigators: In most states private detectives and investigators are licensed by the state and exempt from registering as process servers. They and anyone in their employ can serve legal process and when doing so are considered officers of the court.

3. Sheriffs, Marshals and Constables: Sworn peace officers.

4. Non registered or licensed individuals: Friends, relatives and others.

In many states as in California a non registered individual may serve up to ten (10) legal documents each year provided that individual is not a party to the action at hand. ie: a plaintiff or defendant, etc.. When the service of the paper has been completed the server must sign an affidavit that the paper was served properly. That affidavit must usually be signed under penalty of perjury.

It is not usually a good idea to have a non professional serve process. They do not normally know the laws and rules involved in process serving nor do they usually know how to fill out a proper proof of service. Either of these can cause a service to be declared invalid and possibly cause you to lose the case or at the least force you to start over. Additionally many people attempt to evade service and a professional has a better chance of completing service. Finally, process serving can be very dangerous. Many people get very angry when served and attempt to take it out on the process server. Over the years I have had many servers beat up and attacked with knives or clubs or hit with thrown rocks. I have had several servers that were non fatal victims of vehicular attacks and three servers that were shot, several more were shot at but not hit.

At one time, Sheriffs, Marshals and Constables were considered good choices for serving papers, however that is not now usually the case. Most Marshals no longer serve papers and many Sheriffs and Constables are so busy doing other things that your papers may sit for weeks or longer before or if they are taken out for service. Additionally, many people, when the see a Marshal's or Sheriff's uniform, just do not answer their door. The Sheriff or Marshal walks away and the papers are returned unserved.

Licensed private detectives and investigators can sometimes make the best servers, however not all of them serve papers and many believe that since they are "big shot" investigators they should charge far more than registered process servers. Others serve so few papers that they sometimes "make a mountain out of a molehill" and turn a fairly easy service into a difficult one. Other investigators turn every service into an investigation in order to run up billable hours. Then again, if you find a good detective agency, they will have numerous service assignments and investigators that can serve papers fast and efficiently for a reasonable fee.

Most licensed investigators can be trusted to be honest about the papers they serve. It is not easy to obtain a license and if they get caught commiting perjury by saying they served a paper when they did not or if they get caught billing a client for work that was not done, they can lose their license. If they lose their license they are out of business as they usually can not get a license reinstated. Additionally, in most states, complaints can be filed against a licensee and those complaints are investigated. Prospective clients can contact the state licensing board and obtain a record of adjudicated complaints.

Registered process servers usually know the laws and rules and for the most part are honest and hard workers. In most counties it is, however, easy to register and there is usually no licensing body to keep an eye on them. Therefore, if the registration is revoked the server can usually get a friend or relative to register and then the server can list himself or herself as an independant contractor working for the new registrant. Also there is no experience required in order to register. Finally there is usually no place where a prospective client can check for or file a complaint against a registrant. The only recourse a client usually has against a registered process server is to file a law suit against the party and then if a judgment is obtained to go against the registrants bond. Note, however that not all registering counties or states require a bond and those that do usually require a bond of $2000.00 or less.

When searching for a process server take care. Do not choose just anyone. Never use a friend or relative. If you find a server over the internet do not just go by the looks of the web site. A person can be a poor web site designer and a good server or vice versa. Call the server and ask questions based on the foregoing information in this article. If the server refuses to speak with you do not use his or her services. If the server is a licensed investigator check out the license. Contact the Better Business Bureau and see if they have any information. Try not to use a one person operation as he or she may not be able to keep up with the workload or may be forced to charge high fees in order to make up for a lack of steady business.

When making your choice do not go by price. Expensive servers are not necessarily the best just as inexpensive servers are not necessarily the worst. Hallstrom Detective Agency was considered to have one of the best process serving divisions in the United States, yet we charged less than almost any other service in the country. Ask about addirtional fees. Many companies quote a low initial fee and then tack on a fortune in incidental fees.

Here Comes the Judge

At one glance, we are sometimes to quick to judge a person by their appearance, be it their clothing, hair style, body language attitude or the lack of these personality traits. The world today is still changing. New fads are wreaking havoc of our customs based on the way things used to be. The young people would call us baby boomers old School. Still there are choices that we make that are based on our young years as baby boomers.

I can often size up a person with a word being said. Most of my intuitions are correct. My daughter finally understood why she could not were certain clothes. If you dress this way this is how people will perceive you and approach you. In the same light if you see a policeman in uniform he will be approached as a respectable peace officer.

Who made you the judge? We could not survive in this world if we did not judge the decisions in our lives. We judge what to eat what to wear, where to live, what cars to drive, the list is endless. The problem arises when we opt to judge someone and their choices that they make in life. We never consider that my choice of shoes that I wore today was the only choice that I may have had.

The majority of the judges in our court systems today strive to be fair and impartial based on local state and federal laws. Having the book thrown at you proves that the judge has done his research and you penalty for breaking the law should not be personal.

I told a friend that President Bush was a great man. This is my judgment/opinion of our world leader. I also spoke to a man whos son was killed in war. He bent my ear and told me where to put my opinion.

What about the more-ways and folkways that we were taught in school? Passing judgment is something that we do even in our dreams. However our judgment should be righteous and not based on self gain, recognition or impartiality.

We often see judges at the Olympics, at football games, in boxing rings, on tennis courts and of course the court system. The Supreme Court usually hands down laws that American citizens are to live by. Moral integrity and doing the right thing should be a normal way of life.

There is an ongoing squabble with the Democrats and the Republicans, Our President the House and the Senate often debate on major issues. However self-made, Lawyers, Doctors Judges, friend and foe will judge you everyday. Even the very one that you love.

Whatever happened to love thy neighbor? A good friend will not judge you. A good friend listens to your conversation. The moral fabric of society continues to torn by the way things look. Today chances are we have no idea who lives next door.

Today it is hard to judge a person on appearance alone. It is best to get to know the person or their plight in life. The heart of man has many stories that are good and bad. How can I judge the splinter in your eye when I have a log in mine?

My final question, Is it right to judge? My answer to this question forced me to look within myself. The Bible says for us not to judge Look at Matthew 7:1,. But, should we judge people? Why not? The world that we live in has no idea of what peace is about. A righteous judgment can only be done by following What God has established in his word.

The Medical History of Oleander Prior to 1960 - Part 3 of the Oleander Series

In the Bible, the oleander plant is referred to as "the desert rose". Perhaps the name given this remarkable plant was no coincidence. Those of you who have read Dan Brown's entertaining combination of fact and fiction, "The Davinci Code", or who otherwise know a bit about pagan and early Christian religion will know that the rose is one of the most powerful of all religious symbols in pagan and early Christian religion and literature. It stands quite literally for nothing less than the feminine half of God, or the Goddess as that entity was called. It was also a symbol for very powerful healing.

Medicinal use of the oleander plant dates back at least 3500 years. Historical records show that the Mesopotamians in the 15th century BC believed in the healing properties of oleander. The Babylonians used a mixture of oleander and licorice to treat hangovers. Roman soldiers also regularly took an oleander extract for hangovers. Pliny, the Elder of ancient Greece, wrote about the appearance and properties of oleander. Arab physicians first used oleander as a cancer treatment in the 8th century AD.

Centuries later, in the 1633 edition of "The Herbal, or General History of Plants", the author John Gerard says of oleander: "This tree being outwardly applied, as Galen saith, hath a digesting faculty; but if it be inwardly taken it is deadly and poisonsome, not only to men, but also to most kinds of beasts. The flowers and leaves kill dogs, asses, mules, and very many of other four footed beasts: but if men drink them in wine they are a remedy against the bitings of Serpents, and the rather if Rue be added. The weaker sort of cattle, as sheep and goats, if they drink the water wherein the leaves have been steeped, are sure to die." which indicates knowledge that the raw plant is poisonous, but that extracts of the plant were used medicinally. And, an oleander extract much like oleander soup is most likely the magic healing potion that led to the witchcraft accusation against Rebecca, the beautiful Jewish woman from the Holy Land, in Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe".

In recent centuries, oleander has continued to be used in folk remedies and in commercial preparations in the Middle East, Russia, China and the South American rain forest. Currently, a Brazilian manufacturer is making and distributing an amazing supplement called OPC Extract worldwide, and the patent holder in South Africa, Marc Swanepoel, is making the supplement as well and using it, along with doctors and caregivers, with remarkable success against HIV and cancer.

Although much of the recent focus on oleander has centered on cancer, HIV, and hepatitis-C, uses based on tradition or theory have included:

Abnormal menstruation, alcoholism, anorexia, anti-fertility, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, asthma, bacterial infections, cachexia (weight loss/wasting from some diseases), cardiac abnormalities, cathartic, corns, diuretic (increase urine flow), epilepsy (seizure), eye diseases, heart disease, hemorrhoids, indigestion, inflammation, insecticide, leprosy, malaria, menstrual stimulant, neurologic disorders, pregnancy termination, psoriasis, psychiatric disorders, rat poison, ringworm, sinus problems, snake bites, skin diseases, skin eruptions, swelling, venereal disease, vomiting, warts, weight gain.

(Source: MedlinePlus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health)

As those who have read the other installments in this series of articles know, thanks to a Texas attorney and a bit of help from others like your humble author, a growing number of people around the world are now able to make their own oleander remedy. In the concluding installments, we will take a look at how effectively oleander is being used against cancer and HIV in South Africa and how to make your own oleander extract for only pennies.

Selling FSBO? - The Tricky Side Of Selling - It's The Paperwork

Ok, you're selling FSBO and you've found a buyer. Now what? A simple one page Purchase and Sale Agreement just won't do. There are so many considerations to protect both the buyer and seller.

Consider property disclosures, lead paint forms, financing, septic inspection forms, well forms, condition of title forms, neighborhood review forms, etc.

You name it, there is a form for it.

You don't want an unaddressed issue to come back and bite you after the sale, so protect yourself and get everybody involved in the transaction to sign and initial.

My first step in selling fsbo would be to have a local real estate agent give me copies of all the forms they use in the process of selling a home. Agents are well protected these days, and the real estate industry makes sure to cover everything possible to help insure a smooth transaction. Go over the forms and see if you are covered for the type of property that you are selling. You should get these forms well in advance, before finding a buyer. Some forms are County specific for your state.

When in doubt, consult a real estate attorney to review your Purchase and Sale Agreement.

To get FSBO form software, just go to your favorite search engine and enter the words "fsbo form software".

While every form is important, the one form that needs your attention most is the "property disclosure form". This is the form that discloses everything that you know about the propety. It is important so the new buyer can make an informed buying decision. You don't want a buyer coming back to you after the purchase to make you pay for a problem that you were aware of, but didn't disclose.

Tom Jacobson is a licensed agent in Washington State and has paid buyer rebates up to $11,000. He offers a FREE 10 - day email course to further educate those potential buyers interested in getting an unadvertised rebate. http://www.easyresponders.com/subscribe.aspx?u=671/666
